The Class A RV is the largest class of motorhomes. They are often called "the big guys," with good reason. These RVs are built for comfort and performance at every level.
Class A RVs are typically built on either a commercial truck or bus chassis, but can also be found with a vehicle chassis. They operate on either diesel or gas, depending on the engine type. Class A RVs can run from 21 to 45 feet in length. They usually have a sleeping capacity of 2 to 8 people. What really sets a Class A RV apart is the amenities you can find in such a large ride.
Class A Motorhome Details
A Class A RV typically comes with a full kitchen, making it convenient for meal prep and food storage, and a full bathroom. There are also multiple sleeping spaces to accommodate the larger passenger capacity.
There will usually be a dinette or other dedicated dining space and lots of storage capacity both in and under the RV. There will be room for entertainment options, such as a television or stereo speakers. Many come with an outdoor kitchen. A Class A RV has plenty of towing capability, usually about 5,000 pounds.
For the family looking to share the most spacious of RV quarters, a Class A RV is an ideal choice. It's also the smart choice for those that plan to stay at one location for an extended period of or prefer a "glamping" experience. This class of RV is an excellent choice for those who are considering full-time RV living.
The Class B is the smallest motorhome type. Think of it as a full-sized van that's been outfitted for extended road trips. Also known as conversion vans or campervans, Class B vans are built on a small chassis. They retain the typical shape of a van on the exterior but are reconfigured as a living space on the interior.
Class B vans are a popular choice for consumers due to their price and versatility. The Class B van is also much easier to operate, with better control and flexibility about driving, parking and maneuvering. They do not require a special driver's license to operate. Class B vans are also the most environmentally friendly. Their gas mileage on average is between 18 and 25 miles per gallon. They are often the most affordable vans to purchase either new or used.
Class B Van Details
Class B vans are usually 17 to 24 feet in length and weigh 6,000 to 8,000 pounds. With less room inside than a Class A van, there are fewer amenities. That doesn't mean, however, that a Class B van is without comfort and convenience.
Usually, these vans fit 1 to 2 (adult) people for sleeping although some can be rigged to fit up to 4 people comfortably. Some Class B vans come equipped with a kitchenette, with a small refrigerator and cooking facilities. There may be a dinette or seating area, storage areas and LED lighting throughout. The beds are likely folding beds. Some vans, like the Winnebago Solis offer a pop top option for extended sleeping. What you may not find in a Class B van is an interior bathroom system, though some have a self-contained toilet and a fresh-water tank. Other perks, like tables or swivel seats are also typically built into the layout of the vans.
The Class B van is perfect for those looking for a daily driver, weekend getaways, and in some instances, part and full-time RVing. It's a good choice for small families, couples, solo travelers or those with pets. They're also ideal for those looking for boondocking adventures as they are often outfitted with solar to keep you exploring longer.
The Class C RV is smaller than a Class A and larger than a Class B van. Its chassis is usually a truck or cutaway van style and operates on gas, not diesel. Class C vans have a typical length of 22 to 31 feet and weight of 10,000 to 12,000 pounds.
The Class C van is perfect when you're taking the whole family on a camping trip or for an extended road trip. The vans can typically hold up to 8 people comfortably. Because they are smaller, these RVs are much easier to operate than a Class A and usually do not require a different driver's license type.
The Class C RV, like the larger Class A motorhomes, comes with many amenities to make traveling comfortable and convenient. While the Class C may not be as spacious or luxurious as a Class A counterpart, it provides everything necessary for a smooth ride with room for everyone. The Class RV often has an overhang above the main cabin, which houses some of the sleeping quarters. The rest of the sleeping room is usually in the back.
Class C RV Details
Class C's often come with a full kitchenette, dinette, and seating areas. There will be heating and air conditioning systems, an entertainment system, LED lighting throughout and storage space. You may find a full bathroom but depending on the size, it may not contain a shower.
Some Class C RVs include a slide-out option. This extra space can be added when the RV is parked, giving you and yours a but more living quarters during your stay. Class C campers usually have the most family-friendly floor plans and are pet-friendly options. There is, however, less towing capacity than with the Class A.
If you're traveling alone, or with one other person, you may find yourself choosing between a smaller Class B or a larger Class C van.
