Monday, April 22nd is Earth Day. The give-back holiday was established in 1970, activating 20 million folks from all walks of life to focus on one common goal - starting the conversation about our environmental issues and creating change through legislation and community. Over one billion people around the world celebrate the international holiday. In preparation for the biggest "go green" day of the year, we're bringing you some of the best Earth Day activities to participate in. From getting outside to giving back, there is something for every RVer and explorer alike.
GO ON A HIKE
There's no better way to celebrate the outdoors then by going for a hike with your RVing pals! This Earth Day, consult our Survival Guide to Hiking USA National Parks, and then get outside. We suggest making your way to local and state parks or even hopping in your RV and making a cross country trip to our country's most iconic National Parks like Yellowstone or Yosemite. If you're looking for some short and stunning hikes across America, check out our list featuring 10 of the Most Beautiful Hikes Under Five Miles Across the U.S.A. They are the perfect way to celebrate this Earth Day!
PARTICIPATE IN AN EARTH CLEAN-UP
Want to make a difference? Earth Day Network, the official Earth Day organization has coordinated volunteer cleanups across the US in effort to give back on April 22nd. What does that mean for you? During the month of April, the network is teaming up with grassroots organizations and communities to clean up our waterways, green spaces and urban landscapes. Join the effort by volunteering with local communities in the areas you pass through while on your RV road trip. You can find your city or town at the link here. If you're unable to participate in one of these clean-up events, create your own! While on your hike pick up trash you see on the trail, bring a reusable water bottle with you (a great way to help with pollution is to eliminate single-use plastic), remember to tread lightly and practice the seven principles of Leave no Trace.
PLANT YOUR OWN HERBS
Have you heard of a grow bag? Smith & Hawken's amazing grow kits comes in an assortment of herbs (basil, rosemary, etc) as well as flowers and is the perfect way to get the kids involved this Earth Day. Each pack comes with non-GMO seeds, a bag of organic soil and a stylish container for your plant. The herbs will live easy in your RV as they grow indoors as well as outdoors! When you grow your own herbs, you're able to skip the grocery store and take only what you need from your personal supply. Growing your own herbs and food is an excellent way to practice sustainability this Earth Day, and all the days to come!
HAVE AN OUTDOOR PICNIC
Another excellent way to celebrate Earth Day is by spending time with the ones you love over a great dish in nature. Whether you're at a campground or in a field, there is no better time to talk about our carbon footprint, world pollution, and solutions that we can participate in effort to combat climate change. Don't just focus on the world's challenges though - instead, focus your conversation on multiple topics by sharing you favorite wild spaces across the United States and defining what nature means to you. The Earth is a stunning place that we are constantly in awe of. Share your favorite places with fellow RVer's so they can enjoy all our natural world has to offer.
